Step into the buzzing world of “Bug Explorers,” an interactive and lively class designed to get your hands dirty and your curiosity piqued at Hidden Bee Farm! Perfect for children who aren’t afraid to meet the smaller inhabitants of our planet, this class is a hands-on exploration of the fascinating lives of insects.
Delve into the squiggly world of worm farms, where earthworms wriggle through the soil, showcasing their essential role in composting and soil health. We’ll dig into their domain, feeling the cool earth as we learn about the worm’s contribution to our ecosystem.
Watch as we reveal the life cycle of beetles, presenting live specimens in various stages from the crawling mealworm to the adult beetle. Witness the marvel of transformation as we explore the metamorphosis process in real-time!
We introduce a live praying mantis egg sac, known as an ootheca. You’ll learn how these remarkable predators emerge and play their part in the balance of nature. And that’s just the beginning; we’ll meet ladybugs, pill bugs, and more as we learn about their habitats, behaviors, and the invaluable roles they play in our gardens and farms.
While we will discuss the buzzing bees and their vital role in pollination, for safety and practical reasons, we won’t be working with live bees. However, our journey will bring us up close with many other live insects and bugs, offering a tactile and visual experience like no other.
Participants will learn how to anticipate, prevent, and respond to various risks, including insect bites and anaphylactic reactions. We will also discuss the importance of bees in our ecosystem, the impact of colony collapse disorder on our food supply, and effective alternatives to insecticides for crop protection.
The session is designed to be inclusive and educational for all, ensuring that every child, including those with special needs, can participate and learn in a supportive environment.
We encourage respect and gentle handling as we work with live insects, fostering a nurturing environment for both the children and the bugs from the crawling mealworm to the adult beetle.
Our live insect lineup is packed with worms, beetles, ladybugs, praying mantises, pill bugs, and other amazing invertebrates. So come ready to explore and leave with a bug’s-eye view of the world!
Plus, for the daring, we even have a tarantula!
Join us for an unforgettable hands-on learning adventure that’s as educational as it is thrilling!
